Depression – that’s a spirit and if I allow that spirit to come in with the negativity it holds then I would probably lose the battle. Phillippians 4:13 says I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me and strengthens is present tense – meaning I can call on help from the Lord at ANY given time.

Richard and Sheri Bright are both comedians and marriage coaches and mentors. After watching this power couple on YouTube, I can tell you that they are a hoot! In this episode you will find so much powerful insight into making marriage last and dealing with the messes that we get ourselves into in life. They also shed light on the ministry life and the importance of being not being perfect but more-so being transparent and honest.
By bearing their souls and sharing their struggles before and during their marriage, Richard and Sheri are able to use their own lessons to help others have stronger, lasting marriages. They both discuss their pasts and what brought them to the place they currently are at, what lead them to church and how they turned their lives and marriage around. They discuss starting in the ministry before they were ready to and how they ended up using honesty and transparency to help other couples and make a difference in an authentic way.

The battle for mental health and finding hope in purpose.
In this episode, I will be continuing my incredible conversation with Grand Rapids native and funny guy – Aaron Sorrels, The Unemployed Alcoholic.
If you missed the first part of our talk, go back and listen to episode 4! We dive more deeply into his battle with mental health and how he found hope and purpose throughout his recovery journey.
Aaron gets super real and raw with us about how his recovery affected his mental health and what he discovered about himself in the process of that recovery. As he fought to recover, he still experienced debilitating bouts of depression and anxiety – things he had assumed were only linked to alcohol. Aaron provides so much courageous inspiration through sharing his experience learning to understand true recovery, opening up to different kinds of treatment, dealing with the judgment from others and finding hope and healing through both God’s love and through pin-pointing his higher purpose in life.

As much stigma as there is around recovery, there’s just as much (if not more) around mental health challenges.

How Aaron went from self-destruction to building up himself and others in an incredible way.
I met Aaron Sorrels, The Unemployed Alcoholic, at a comedy show in Grand Rapids and he really stole the show that day. It is such a pleasure to have him on the show to share his incredible story of battling through substance abuse, identity crisis, depression, and anxiety. You will be so inspired by how he turned around his life from such a dark place to find his higher calling to help others recover, heal and find hope. Aaron shares his story growing up in a Christian home, being an alcoholic from early on and dealing with bullying and how all of this came together to make him who he is today. He never pictured himself being a comedian but he explains how unemployment and observing his journey through the mixture of blessings and issues in his life brought comedy into his life. Whether you have dealt with substance abuse yourself or are feeling beaten down by unemployment, I know you will find inspiration and hope in Aaron’s story!

A couple weeks of unemployment turned into a couple months and then a year of unemployment. That was just a really hard time but it was a good and valuable time. I was able to dig deep into the deep hurts that caused me to turn to alcohol for a numbing purpose.

Recovery is a difficult road to go down but it is so valuable. Some of the things I have gained through going through the 12-step program – I wouldn’t have been able to gain that insight and that wisdom through anything else. I would actually recommend the 12-step recovery program to anybody else.

Learn how God can turn trauma and pain into something beautiful.
This is the second part of the 2-part series featuring Funny Gal Sal, Sally Baucke. If you missed the first part, be sure to go back and listen because we talked a lot about how Sally discovered comedy and was able to achieve a mindset transformation and using the trauma in her life to bless others. In this episode we will continue that conversation and discuss in more depth why comedy is so important to her and how God brings out his glory in the darkest places.
Battling self-esteem and self-worth from an early age put her on a difficult path growing up but Sally talks about how God took her down a path that ultimately lifted her up and brought glory to the kingdom. We often find ourselves putting negative experiences on God and Sally shares her own perspective and experience of how she did this and ultimately was able to see how God sees her – as his own daughter.

God always takes our path and he will take us down a place that eventually brings him glory one way or another and for me, that is what comedy has helped me do.

We tend to transfer those feelings of not being enough, of being invisible, of being misunderstood. I feel those things and put those things on God and thought he felt those things about me as well. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.

I just want them to feel seen and loved because that’s what I needed. And if my comedy helps them feel that way, then God has used that pain and not wasted it but used it for good. I’m okay with that!

There was a lot of judging and criticism and it left me wanting and feeling like I could never attain the love of a father. To be honest, I believe many of us transfer that feeling of an earthly father towards the heavenly father. This is how we see God – Is he uninterested? does he think we are silly?
